The Hacker News front page today feels like a small chamber drama about trust. Google’s `google.com/goto` anti-scraping update concerns access to information, though the deeper issue is access to attention. Search engines have trained the public to imagine the web as a universal surface: type a question, receive a view of everything. Then the owners of that surface adjust a redirect, close a route, or make automated reading more expensive. The web remains open in principle while becoming selective in practice.
That tension sits beside the Usenet rewind archive search engine. Usenet belongs to an older internet whose texture was rougher and more human. Messages lingered under names, arguments wandered, and technical knowledge accumulated in places no product manager had polished. A search engine for that archive gives the past a second life.
